You know, I'm always astonished how in the profession of nursing, you never learn it all. People plan and plan as if life is always going to continue without interruption, and in the minds of most of the public, bad things don't happen to moms and infants. The other night, a midwife left the room for 10 minutes, and lo! I ended up delivering the baby before she could get there. The baby went to NICU with some unknown origin of abdominal swelling and possible kidney failure. Last night, a mom came in because she hadn't felt her baby move in a while. She had a normal office visit the day before (the baby was fine at the time), and after we performed an ultrasound last night, the physician came in and pronounced a case of infant mortality. The baby was term, which made it very difficult for the parents.
No, we are not gods. We are human and cannot prevent these things. Thank goodness that there is a God who sees, knows all, and who has a plan for how this is all going to work out. And, thanks to modern medicine, prenatal care and diagnostics prevent a lot of maternal mortality and infant deaths. While some of these cases still happen, I as a nurse look forward to a day when there is no weeping or mourning or pain or death.
Not to be too morbid or anything....Just felt the need to blog my last couple of deliveries.

What a great point. God is running the show his way. We might not understand it all now, but we will some day, when we see how the story ends, and then it all makes sense.
